Pakistan’s parliament passes FATF-related bills

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s parliament has passed three laws crucial to the fulfilment of the Financial Action Task Force requirements. 

The three laws that were passed included Anti-Money Laundering Bill and the Anti-Terrorism Act Bill. 

Despite having lower numbers in the joint session of the parliament, the government managed to pass three bills.The bills were passed by a majority of 200-190. The Anti-Money Laundering Bill is aimed at streamlining the existing law in line with the FATF standards.

The Anti-Terrorism Bill aims to curb terror financing. As per the Anti-Terrorism Act (Amendment) Bill, the investigating officer, with the court’s nod, can conduct covert operations to detect terrorism funding, track communications and computer system by employing latest technologies in 60 days.

Prime Minister Imran Khan attended the joint session which was chaired by National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser. During his address, Khan said passing this legislation was crucial for Pakistan.
