The World Economic Forum says Pakistan has been inducted to a global champions for nature community.
In a letter, the forum said Pakistan was selected in recognition of its green policies. It said the country’s holistic approach to fighting climate change, nature degradation and loss of livelihoods have lessons to learn.
The forum said Prime Minister Imran Khan’s strong commitment to the nature agenda and reforestation will be invaluable. It said Pakistan will now be part of a community to lead the way to a nature-positive global economy and halt nature loss by 2030.
In August, over a million volunteers planted trees as part of the premier’s 10 Billion Tree Tsunami initiative.
Meanwhile, prime minister’s special assistant on Climate Change, Malik Amin Aslam, has been invited to join the Champions for Nature at the World Economic forum.
He said Pakistan bagged such recognition due to the premier’s efforts of introducing and pursuing green policies in the country as a part of the international efforts that help cast positive impacts on the economy and stem biodiversity loss.
Aslam said this is indeed an outstanding achievement for the country for being invited to become a part of the body of the ‘Champions for Nature’ and get the globally-recognized title at the forthcoming annual meeting of the World Economic Forum.
He said that the Champions for Nature are organised into three working groups which puts its focus on transforming the socio-economic systems with the biggest impact on nature.
He said being part of the Nature Action Agenda, the WEF’s Champions community assembles the leaders from the public and private sectors, civil society, academia, and activism – all playing complementary roles in a multi-stakeholder approach.
Champions for Nature initiative was established during the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum at Davos in January 2020.
In its first year, the Champions recognise that their community is well-positioned to back a green post-coronavirus recovery through systems transformation for the benefit of the economy, human health and nature.
